A deep protozoan maximum in the Gulf of Maine*
نویسنده
چکیده
We found a deep maximum In the abundance of larger protozoans (>35 wm) in the Gulf of Maine at depths from 55 to 100 m, which was well below the euphotic zone, pycnocline, and the depths of peak biomass and production of both phytoplankton and bac te r~a . Our calculations of the energetics of these protozoan populations suggest that they are unable to obtain sufficient nutrition from local microbial production. We discuss the possibility that organic material, which settles out of the surface layer, might collect at a deep hydrographic anomaly and sustaln the protozoans in the deep maximum.

During this study from December 2009 to November 2011, 363Deep flounder fish were caught and their weight and length were measured. The caught fish included 18 males, 200 females and 155 immature fishes. The mean, maximum and minimum total lengths were 264 ± 57 (mean ± SD), 415 mm and 115 mm respectively. The mean, maximum, and minimum total weights for this species were 238 ± 150 g, 827 g and ...
متن کاملBiodiversity of the Deep-Sea Continental Margin Bordering the Gulf of Maine (NW Atlantic): Relationships among Sub-Regions and to Shelf Systems
BACKGROUND In contrast to the well-studied continental shelf region of the Gulf of Maine, fundamental questions regarding the diversity, distribution, and abundance of species living in deep-sea habitats along the adjacent continental margin remain unanswered. Lack of such knowledge precludes a greater understanding of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and limits development of alternatives for conse...
متن کاملAlexandrium fundyense cyst viability and germling survival in light vs. dark at a constant low temperature.
Both observations and models suggest that large-scale coastal blooms of Alexandrium fundyense in the Gulf of Maine are seeded by deep-bottom cyst accumulation zones ("seed beds") where cysts germinate from the sediment surface or the overlying near-bottom nepheloid layers at water depths exceeding 100 m. The germling cells and their vegetative progeny are assumed to be subject to mortality whil...
متن کاملSources and cycling of nitrogen in the Gulf of Maine
An analysis of water mass flows and nitrogen fluxes in the Gulf of Maine region shows that deep Slope Water that enters the Gulf through the Northeast Channel, and Scotian Shelf Water that enters at the surface, dominate the flux of nitrogen into the Gulf. A box model is developed that examines internal vertical nitrogen fluxes, and reveals that the flux of nitrogen into surface waters is suffi...
متن کاملRelationships between satellite-measured thermal features and Alexandrium-imposed toxicity in the Gulf of Maine
Relationships between satellite-derived sea-surface temperature (SST) patterns and the occurrence of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxicity events caused by Alexandrium fundyense in the western Gulf of Maine are examined. Comparisons between surface A. fundyense cell distribution patterns and SST images indicate that highest cell concentrations are associated with colder waters of the eas...
